Bright, white teeth are a sign of youth and health. Nobody wants to look sick and old, so that’s why teeth whitening is in universal demand. We all want to get rid of the effects of coffee, tea, and nicotine on our teeth, not to mention the daily accumulation that comes with age. Teeth whitening is very effective, allowing you to achieve a healthier and more youthful smile.

What Stains Teeth Whitening Can Remove
Teeth whitening is very effective at removing stains caused by foods, beverages, and other sources. This includes stains due to:
- Red wine
- Dark beer
Actually, almost all foods and beverages we consume have the potential to stain our teeth. For example, apples and potatoes may not seem like they can stain your teeth, but they contain a compound called polyphenol oxidase that can stain your teeth—it’s what makes them turn brown or black after you cut them. And any baked goods have staining compounds in them, too. It’s impossible to eat and drink without exposing your teeth to staining molecules.
How Teeth Whitening Works
Teeth whitening uses a chemical—hydrogen peroxide and similar forms—to attack stain molecules that have been embedded in your tooth enamel. The peroxide molecules are small and can penetrate into the pores in your teeth where the stains are embedded. It breaks them down and removes them.
We will make you some custom teeth whitening trays that will fit snugly on your teeth to keep the whitening compound where it belongs and away from your gums, which can be irritated by contact. The gel we use is much stronger than what’s available over the counter, and, combined with the better-fitting whitening trays, the results you achieve working with a dentist are much better than from at-home kits.
We don’t use in-office whitening because it doesn’t give results that are as good as it promises, and many people are unhappy as a result. We only offer treatments we know are effective.
Avoid Dangerous Home Whitening
Whitening kits you buy at the store are moderately effective and they are relatively safe, if used according to instructions. But there are many teeth-whitening strategies that can damage your teeth.
Any abrasive toothpaste or material that you use to brush your teeth can remove stains, but it’s also removing enamel. As your enamel gets worn away, your teeth will actually turn yellowish in color. There are also many acidic home recipes—such as strawberries mixed with baking soda or apple cider vinegar—that can chemically erode your teeth.
Talk to a dentist before you try any at-home whitening solution.
What If Whitening Doesn’t Work?
There are many reasons why teeth whitening might not whiten your teeth. Teeth whitening removes stains related to organic compounds that are in the surface levels of your teeth. If you have discoloration that is deep in the tooth—such as discoloration due to trauma or exposure to certain chemicals as a child—teeth whitening can’t help. But we can use porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns to cover the discolored teeth.
