It is hard to find someone that is excited about going to the dentist. Sometimes something as simple as the sound of dental equipment is enough to trigger anxiety, and it is hard to overcome that with horror stories about dentists proliferating popular culture. Going to the dentist should not be seen as a scary event in one’s life. It should be viewed as an opportunity to improve your health and wellness. Fortunately we have a few tips to make your trip to the dentist more comfortable.

Woman fearing her dental visit

  1. Listen to Music

Listening to your favorite music while you are visiting the dentist can help take your mind off of the procedure at hand. This is especially true if the sound of dental equipment triggers anxiety for you. Music can even help you recover from dental surgery.

  1. De-Stress Eating

Comfort food need not be bad for you. Foods such as apples, walnuts, and dark chocolate can help regulate your stress levels and are also good for your overall health.

  1. Be Prepared!

Practicing proper dental hygiene can make your visits to the dentist much less intimidating. If given the choice between a simple cleaning and dental surgery (such as getting dental implants) you would be hard pressed to find someone who would rather get the implants!

  1. Sedation Dentistry

If you find that going to the dentist still fills you with dread after following some of these steps, then you may want to consider sedation dentistry. You simply have to take a pill beforehand to relax you enough before the procedure and have a ride arranged to get you to and from the dentist. This is ideal if you have a strong gag reflex or if you have a longer appointment due to scheduling conflicts. You may even get to the point where the sedation pill is no longer needed!
